Does dental insurance cover dentures?

Yes, many dental insurance plans help cover the costs of dentures. However, the amount and type of coverage can depend on your plan.

Here’s a look into what dentures are, if dental insurance covers them and more.

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable devices that help replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They include artificial teeth and a pink base that acts as the gums. Dentures can be made from acrylic, resin, nylon, metal or porcelain and can be used for your upper jaw, lower jaw or both.

In addition to improving your dental function, dentures can improve your appearance. They help maintain the shape of your face and prevent your remaining teeth from shifting.

Types of dentures

There are 4 types of dentures:

  • Immediate—These dentures are fitted the same day you have your teeth removed. Immediate dentures are usually a temporary solution to help with healing after a procedure.
  • Conventional—These are fully removable and made more precisely to fit your mouth than immediate dentures. Conventional dentures are usually fitted after the mouth has fully healed, and they typically fill a whole section of your mouth that does not have any teeth remaining.
  • Overdenture—If your teeth do not have to be fully removed, an overdenture may be a good option. These dentures fit over partial teeth or a small number of teeth to help give the appearance of a full set of healthy teeth.
  • Snap-in denturesSnap-in dentures are a semi-permanent option to replace missing teeth. They’re called “snap-in” because they snap into dental implants that are screwed into your jawbone. Snap-in dentures are removable, but the dental implants are not.

Are dentures covered by dental insurance?
